Binghamton is expected to utilize more police officers during this year’s downtown Bar Crawl compared to last year.

Mayor Richard David said the annual event is not sanctioned by the city and is tolerated “as long as people are abiding by the law.” The Bar Crawl will be held on Thursday, just ahead of this weekend’s Binghamton University graduation ceremonies.

Speaking on WNBF Radio’s Binghamton Now program Tuesday, the mayor said the city police will have an “enhanced presence” for the student celebration. He declined to say how many officers will be assigned to areas where students are expected to gather downtown and on the West Side.

David said he’s “always concerned” about safety during large-scale events. He said he is especially concerned when people are seen on the rooftops of downtown buildings. Because they are on private property, the mayor said “there’s really nothing the city can do about that.”

Two years ago, a student sustained serious head injuries when she fell from the roof of a downtown structure during a Bar Crawl celebration.
