If you need to justify SpongeBob Squarepants' existence, then look no further than N.E.R.D.'s new track 'Squeeze Me.' The rock band -- featuring Pharrell Williams, Chad Hugo and Shay Haley -- reunites on the song,' which will appear on the soundtrack to upcoming flick, 'The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out of Water.'

The 'Happy' creator spoke to Variety about the inspiration for the song.

"We're trying not to think too much in a cartoon sense, but more just like a psychedelic, otherworldly type of thing," said Pharrell. "If you want to draw a parallel, maybe think of what the Beatles did with 'Yellow Submarine.'"

Turns out 'Yellow Submarine' is an exact comparison. It's not as psychedelic as the Fab Four's 1968 song, but 'Squeeze Me' does channel the movie's playfulness with its tropical vibe.

"So refreshing / Won't you believe me? / Squeeze me," Pharrell sings on the trombone-driven track.

N.E.R.D.'s tune 'Squeeze Me' will officially arrive on Jan. 5 via iTunes.

The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out of Water 3D' will open in theaters on Feb. 6.
