Broome County District Attorney Steven Cornwell says he’s trying to gain an upper-hand on the problem of domestic violence in the Binghamton area.

Cornwell has named Christopher Ganz Specialized Prosecutor for misdemeanor-level domestic violence cases.  Ganz comes from the Philadelphia District Attorney’s Office where he prosecuted thousands of sexual assault, domestic violence or child abuse cases over the past several years.

Ganz has been training for two weeks and was to start the job in Binghamton February 26.

Cornwell says by aggressively prosecuting misdemeanor cases, which were normally handled by Assistant District Attorneys who also handle a variety of other cases, it’s hoped more violent and deadly D.V. cases can be prevented.

The DA’s office says in 2016, Broome County saw 611 misdemeanor-level domestic violence cases.
