Jeffrey Ahearn has been selected by the district Board of Education to succeed Mark LaRoach, who retired four months ago.

Ahearn has been serving as the interim Vestal school superintendent since LaRoach left the post.

The choice of Ahearn follows a five-month search for a new superintendent that was coordinated by a recruiting firm retained by the school board.

The board is expected to formally appoint Ahearn at its May 10 meeting.

In a statement, board president Michon Stuart said Ahearn has served the district well as interim superintendent.

He started work for the Vestal district as school business administrator in September 2012.

During an interview on WNBF Radio's Binghamton Now program on Monday, Stuart said the next superintendent could be paid an annual salary of $180,000. He anticipated the new superintendent would be signed to a three-year contract.
