Former Vestal Golden Bear and Binghamton Bearcat Nick Wegmann was selected by the Seattle Mariners in the 34th round of the Major League Baseball Amateur Draft yesterday (Wednesday).  Wegmann was a standout quarterback and baseball player at Vestal High School.  He continued his education and career at Binghamton University where he just finished his senior season for Coach Tim Sinicki.

At BU he registered nine wins, struckout 142 opposing batters and posted a 3.87 career ERA.  Wegmann was playing in the independent Frontier League for the Washington (Pa.) Wild Things managed by former Binghamton Met Gregg Langbehn.  In 4 appearances there Wegmann recorded three strikeouts in 3.1 innings pitched with no decisions.  He struckout out three and walked three while giving up two runs and a pair of hits.

Wegmann is awaiting word from the Mariners on where to report for assignment.  He will become a member of an organization very familiar with the Binghamton area.  Former Binghamton Mets Tom Allison and Scott Hunter play prominent roles with the Mariners.  Allison, a former Binghamton Met infielder, is the Vice-President of Player Personnel. Hunter, who was an outfielder with Binghamton, is Seattle's Director of Amateur Scouting and spent ten seasons as a coach or scout with the New York Mets.
