Three nurses who cared for inmates at the Broome County Jail say they were let go or forced to quit by the company contracted to provide medical care at the jail.

The nurses have filed a lawsuit with Correctional Medical Care claiming the company wanted them to falsify records in order to pass accreditation.

The RNs said they were told to backdate some call sheets, which resulted in some inmates missing medications and otherwise directed to restrict care.

Attorney Ronald Benjamin, who is representing the three, says Correctional Medical Care was looking to cut costs to make the contract profitable.

In addition to one of the nurses saying she resigned after receiving a review that kept her from working in the jail, others said they were fired when they refused to follow directives from the company that they felt would compromise inmate care.

Correctional Healthcare issued a statement refuting the claims saying the suit is “baseless and built on a number of lies and exaggerations.”  CMC also touted donating more than 2-point-one million dollars in staffing to address more severe health issues in jails.
