NY Mets Pitchers Need to Find Their Way

Things were looking great for the New York Mets coming north out of Spring Training in Florida.  They got off to a start of 11-1 and everything was going their way.  Since that blistering start New York has lost six of its last ten outings.  The pitching staff started solidlly and was a big part of why New York was on top of its division.

In baseball things seem to have a way of of evening out. That's why those on top need to plan ahead for a time when things are not going well.  Such is the case with New York.

The pitching staff that appeared to showcase the team's  best component is now a large question mark.  Noah Syndergaard and Jacob DeGrom have been outstanding.  DeGrom is 2-0 with a 2.53 ERA.  Syndergaard is 2-0 and came into today's (Thursday's) game against the Cardinals with a 3.29 ERA.  In today's outing Syndergaard went 7.1 innings and allowed one run on six hits while striking out seven in a no decision.

After those two the problems begin.  Matt Harvey continues to struggle in attempting to regain the form that made him one of the elite starters in the game.  He is 0-2 with an earned run average of 5.87.  He has been moved out of the starting rotation and in his first appearance out of the bullpen went two innings and gave up one run.

Steven Matz is 1-2 with an ERA  of 4.98.  Matz was chased after 3.1 innings pitched last night in a 9-1 loss to St. Louis.  Zack Wheeler is another who has been battling back from arm injuries and is 1-1 after starting the season in Triple-A Las Vegas.

Once again, New York's strongest asset...pitching...has become a major weakness except when Syndergaard or DeGrom get the start.  The Mets will need to either fix the others problems or continue to struggle as the season continues.
