The Binghamton Mets have been on the lips of virtually everyone I know since announcing that they'd be revamping their image and their name. Some people are excited and think that it's time to freshen things up, while others are outraged and vow to protest any changes.

I'm sort of Switzerland on the whole Binghamton Mets name and image change business. I'm a big believer in freshening things up every once in a while to make it shiny, new, and exciting again. But at the same time, I understand the history behind being called the "Binghamton Mets" for 25 years and how potential new team names such as the Rocking Horses, Rumble Ponies, Timber Jockeys, Stud Muffins, Gobblers, or the Bullheads can feel like a joke. The last thing Binghamtonians want is to be the butt of any more jokes.

However, I think now might be a good time to mention that it's not just the Binghamton Mets looking at a new team name. A lot of minor league teams are adopting really obscure team names- names so out there that they actually make our potential team names sound good.

A farm team for the New York Yankees out of Staten Island currently goes by the name the "Staten Island Yankees," which isn’t all that creative and apparently, "creative" is the new rage for team names.

So what did the Staten Island Yankees to do? The same thing the Binghamton Mets did- they opened online voting to let fans choose a new name. One of the names seriously getting tossed around is the Staten Island Pizza Rats, which would honor a rodent who someone filmed dragging a piece of pizza down the stairs of a subway station. That's right- the rat in the video below could end up as the mascot for a professional sports league.

I don't know about you, but I can't help but think of Splinter from Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.
