Authorities say a Binghamton resident died shortly after he was struck by a car on the city's West Side.

Investigators say 47-year-old Ronald Richardson was hit by a 2010 Hyundai Elantra on Main Street near Laurel Avenue around 5:45 p.m. Monday.

Police say the man was dragged several yards before the vehicle turned into the parking lot of Tom's Coffee, Cards and Gifts at 184 Main Street.

Richardson was pinned underneath the car. People who witnessed the incident assisted police officers and firefighters in flipping the vehicle off the man.

Richardson was pronounced dead at the scene before emergency personnel could reach him.

Detectives say the driver - 36-year-old Jennifer Grenchus of Vestal - is suspected of being impaired by drugs when she struck Richards.

Grenchus has been charged with vehicular manslaughter. She was arraigned in Binghamton City Court and sent to Broome County Jail.

Police say Grenchus had been arrested about two blocks away from the crash scene last Thursday. Records indicate she faces multiple misdemenor narcotics charges as a result of that arrest.
