Investigators have publicly identified the man who was shot after he allegedly struck a state trooper on Binghamton's South Side.

Authorities said the suspect is 36-year-old James Giacalone of Glen Aubrey. He was shot in the face by a trooper who was attempting to take him into custody near the intersection of Conklin Avenue and Alfred Street.

According to state police, troopers started to pursue a 2017 Ford Fusion on Mitchell Avenue around 5:05 p.m. Tuesday. They were seeking Giacalone who was wanted on an active arrest warrant.

Officials said fled in the vehicle, which was pursued on several streets. Giacalone is said to have turned from Conklin Avenue onto Alfred Street. Troopers tried to take Giacalone into custody after the car struck a utility pole.

Giacalone then backed down Alfred Street, across Conklin Avenue and into a parking lot. As police approached the car, it moved forward and struck one of the troopers.

The trooper who was hit fired one shot, wounding Giacalone in the face. The suspect fled in the vehicle. He was located a few blocks away after a few minutes.

Giacalone initially was treated at Wilson Medical Center in Johnson City. He later was transferred to Geisinger Medical Center in Danville, Pennsylvania.

The injured trooper, who was not identified, was taken to Wilson for leg and facial injuries. He was treated and released.
