Police: Remains Were Those of Missing Broome Woman

Investigators say the human remains found in the Chenango River near Binghamton were those of a 37-year-old woman who had been missing for several weeks.

According to the Broome County Sheriff's Office, the remains discovered in Port Dickinson were those of Brenda Halpin.

The Chenango Bridge woman was reported missing from her Poplar Hill Road home early last month.

Detectives say the positive identification was made through fingerprint comparison and analysis Thursday afternoon.

The investigation is continuing into Halpin's death, which was a result of drowning. Police have not revealed the manner of death.

When the search began for Halpin on April 9, authorities said she had been diagnosed with Huntington's disease. They said she may have had difficulty walking normally.

Investigators also had said Halpin did not drive and did not use a cellphone.

A man walking along the Chenango River discovered the decomposed human remains on Tuesday afternoon.
