‘Puff the Magic Dragon’ Writer Swears It’s Not About Drugs
It's now been 52 years since Peter, Paul and Mary released it in 1963. The song is based on a poem by Leonard Lipton (is that the tea guy?).
To this day Lipton still swears Puff is completely innocent. He states the following,
"A song for little kids that advocates the use of drugs would not be appropriate. Advocating marijuana for little kids is not a good thing. My poem was directly inspired by an Ogden Nash poem called 'A Tale of Custard the Dragon'. Pirates and dragons, back then, were common interests in stories for boys. The Puff story is really just a lot like Peter Pan."
