The American Red Cross of the Southern Tier is installing free smoke alarms in the area.

The effort July 16 with AmeriCorps is focused on mobile homes to provide home fire prevention and safety information for residents.

In the past year, the Red Cross has installed more than 750 smoke alarms.

Officials say the initiative is aimed a reducing the number of fire-related injuries and deaths by 25 percent.

The Red Cross is also asking residents to participate in the fire safety effort by checking their existing smoke alarms and practice fire drills at home.
