The first relationship that you tend to observe at a young age is that of your parents. You learn and shape your views about what a relationship is all about from them. Bustle believes that you develop certain relationship habits based on what your parents taught you through their relationship with each other.

  • How you handle conflict whether your mother was more likely to throw tea cups across the room during an argument or your father tended to lock himself in his den, you see relationship conflict through them and could very well mirror their habits with your own.
  • What a relationship should look like because maybe your parents never got married to one another so perhaps now you're noticing your lack of desire to sign on the dotted line as well.
  • How you view relationship roles such as believing that the man should be the breadwinner and the woman should stay at home and clean the house. If you find someone with similar views, great! If not, you may want to reflect on that and see where you can compromise.

Relationships are tricky things, and seeing how your parents treated one another and their relationship as a whole was the first glimpse into just how complicated they can be.
