It's not an industry secret, commercials pay the bills. I think the media just doesn't talk about it. Someone on Reddit is though, recently pointed out that TBS is speeding up 'Seinfeld' reruns by 7.5% to sneak in two more minutes of commercials.  TBS hasn't commented, but they're probably doing it because the standard length for sitcoms is shorter than it was 20 years ago and now, there's more spot time. Here's the video the Reddit user posted to confirm the turbo boost.

Now here's the situation, you have the present standard sitcom length of today at 22 minutes, while back in the 90's it was 24 minutes. The station's sales staff is selling commercials to fill at most an 8 minute stop set, which is where programming stops to run a set of advertisements. So now stations are running reruns of a popular show from the 90's and they are 2 minutes to long on every segment of the show. What to do? Well you have two options:

1) Cut the crap out of it. That's right remove some of the show!

2) Leave it in it's entirety and speed it up to fit the new 22 minute slot.

I say great job TBS for not hacking to pieces one of the comedy shows we know and love.
