New York State Senator Fred Akshar is asking the state Attorney General to look into the shipping of New York City homeless families to Broome and other “upstate” counties under the so called “SOTA” or “Special One-Time Assistance” program.

The Colesville Republican blasted New York Mayor Bill de Blasio for what he called the lack of “moral courage to actually help those who need it.”

Akshar says he wants Attorney General Eric Schneiderman’s office to look into the legally of what he called the “morally bankrupt practice.”

The program, which was brought to light last week by Broome County officials who said it was illegal and demanded New York City pay the County back for expenses it has taken on caring for the downstate families, has also been front page material in New York City newspapers with articles published in the New York Post.
