Shelters Shift for Residents Displaced by Flooding in Broome County
Another early sign of recovery from flash flooding is the adjustment of emergency shelter for people displaced by high water.
The American Red Cross August 15 closed one shelter and moved the shelter at the Vestal American Legion to Donnelly Elementary School on Conklin Road in Conklin. There had been close to two-dozen residents sheltered at the height of the emergency.
Meanwhile, local health officials caution residents returning home to work quickly to control moisture and potentially dangerous mold.
Wet items should be handled carefully and disposed of quickly while ventilation is activated to dry out surfaces. Residents should also use extra care around electrical and gas utilities. Make sure power is off and authorities notified if water has gotten into electrical panels.
