Binghamton’s North Side “food desert” still isn’t getting its own grocery store, but plans are moving ahead to make shopping easier for residents, many of whom don’t or can’t drive.

City officials, the Community Hunger Outreach Warehouse, United Way and other leaders met with residents to talk about the start of a shuttle service that will travel to a grocery store about a mile away several days a week.

The City is still looking for input on times of operation and who would be using the service.

North Side residents can contact their councilman, Conrad Taylor at 772-7236 or the Mayor’s office at 772-7001 to offer suggestions.

Last summer, the City and CHOW started a fresh mobile market program to deliver fruits and vegetables to the neighborhood.  Organizers say more than 31 hundred customers have been served by the fresh food program, which is to continue.
