Springtime Environmental Advice on Southern Tier Close Up

Environmental Natural Resource Educator with Cornell Cooperative Extension in Broome County, Kevin Mather appears on the weekly local public affairs program, Southern Tier Close Up May 13 at 6am with some insights to talk about some things residents should know going into the spring and summer seasons, including how to fight the spread of invasive species.

Mather says the Emerald Ash Borer beetle that has been decimating ash trees in the region, even with confirmed discovery of the bug in Broome and Tioga Counties, is not the only unwanted diner visiting the region.

Mather says it's important to know regulations regarding the moving of wood as well as other factors in the introduction of invasive species that could damage or totally destroy native plants and animals.

In addition to those cautions, the Cornell Cooperative Extension educator has information on safely and properly preparing lawns and gardens for the growing season. That includes advice on fertilizer use and weed management.
