A new program begins in Broome County Monday, May 2 designed to provide a supportive living environment for mothers recovering from drug addiction and their babies that are born addicted.

Officials announced “The Bridge” will provide a minimum of a seven month stay at a 24-hour-a-day staffed residence at the YWCA in Binghamton.

The program will serve up to eight women and their children.

In addition to supportive housing, “The Bridge” will provide rehabilitation, development of support systems and help in the development of life skills to become abstinent from illegal drugs while the mother is allowed to bond with her child.

Often, addicted babies are taken away from their mothers and placed in specialized foster care.
