September 11th will always be a day where we remember where we were when the planes hit the Twin Towers and the Pentagon.

It was such a scary day. I remember Alexis was 11 months old at the time and I was laying in my bed nursing her. Someone called to tell me the weirdest thing happened and I should turn on the news, somehow a plane flew into one of the Twin Towers. How bizarre. I turned the TV on and was watching it when the second plane hit. At that point you knew it wasn't a freak accident, you knew it was intentional. I'm sure everybody can remember exactly where they were and what they were doing on that date. And we memorialize that day every year.

One of the ways to memorialize it is with The Day of Caring. I'm involved with a group within the Chamber of Commerce, and we decided this year we were going to help out The United Way. So Friday afternoon our group got together and we did some yard work and clean up work for them. It was a great afternoon, the sun was shining, spending it with friends who wanted to recognize that this is a day of tragedy but let's turn it into a day of helping others.

The United Way told us they had several groups volunteer their time that day which really says a lot about people in our community. Thousands of people gave of their time and resources and went to help people down in Manhattan back in 2001. I'm really glad that we have The Day of Caring now so people can continue doing that and help out the community.
