A bouncing baby prehensile-tail porcupine has been born at the Ross Park Zoo on Morgan Road on Binghamton's Southside.

The Zoo says the baby was born on June 21 and is on exhibit with mommy and daddy Zoey and Mattie in the New World Tropics building.

The porcupines come from South America and are part of the Species Survival Plan.

Mom porcupine said in an exclusive interview that she's happy baby porcupines or Porcupettes are born with soft and bendable quills that gradually harden over ten weeks.

The sex of the baby won't be known for a while. After that, a name will be selected.

You can find out more about this animal at the Zoo.

Admission is $7 for adults and $5 for children ages 3-11.  The admission booth opens from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and the zoo closes at 5 p.m.
