The History of Binghamton’s Beloved Spiedie

It would be almost impossible to spend any amount of time in the Binghamton area and not hear someone talk about a spiedie. Binghamton's claim-to-fame is the spiedie!

What is a spiedie? It's marinated chunks of either chicken, pork or lamb on Italian bread.

The movie, The Rewrite, starring Hugh Grant and Marisa Tomei, which features Binghamton as its backdrop, knew that if they wanted to seem authentic they would have to incorporate the spiedie into a scene or two.

Recently, internet news and media heavyweight, Buzzfeed, got wind of the spiedie and wanted to know more. Their team ventured upstate to find out exactly what all the hype was about. I think that they were pleasantly surprised to find out how big the spiedie really is around here.

From having one of the biggest festivals of the summer named after it, to actually making a spiedie mascot for the Binghamton Mets, Buzzfeed, discovered how much the Binghamton area embraces their beloved spiedie.
