By the end of a long five day week of school or work we’re normally feeling the exhaustion taking over and trying to catch up on the weekends. The majority of Americans don’t get the recommended seven to nine hours on an average night that their bodies need but did you know there are risks to getting too much sleep?

According to The Huffington Post, the risks you’re putting your body through when you oversleep that prevent you from living a longer and happier life.

The Brain: Too much sleep can lead to higher risks of depression and damage your brain’s function. The gradual aging process in the brain has a higher risk of speeding up with more than nine hours of sleep.

No Babies: Women getting their average night’s sleep were more likely to get pregnant than those sleeping more than needed. Sleep also affects a woman’s hormones and monthly cycles.

Health: Oversleeping can increase your risk of diabetes and stroke.

The Heavy Truth: For those watching your weight, sleep can actually make you gain!

Early Grave: Too much sleep can lead to an early death.

Next time you consider sleeping in over the weekend, don’t be alarmed that you can’t get a little extra shut eye once in a while but rethink these health risks before you fall into a pattern.
