TLC Spark Controversy With New Remix of ‘Waterfalls’

To help celebrate the 20th Anniversary of the smash hit ‘Waterfalls,’ TLC members T-Boz and Chilli released a remix of the classic by adding Japanese pop star Namie Amuro to the mix. The track has sparked controversy, causing fans and the family of Lisa “Left Eye” Lopes’ to bash the new tune.

Last week, TLC shocked fans when they debuted the remix, which no longer featured Left Eye’s verse, but rather a new one by Amuro. Left Eye’s sister, Reigndrop Lopes, expressed her family’s feelings regarding the song. “I mean, it would have been nice if they would have given us a heads up before being surprised,” she told TMZ.

Chilli and T-Boz gave an explanation to Yahoo! Music as to why they used Amuro’s voice on the ‘Waterfalls’ remix. “We don’t own the master recording rights to Lisa’s raps on any of our music, and our requests to gain the rights so far have been denied. With the Japanese anniversary edition, we were forced to use creative ways to honor Lisa’s memory and celebrate this milestone with our fans,” Chilli said in a statement.

T-Boz also took to Twitter to assure fans it was simply a tribute to their deceased member. “@JKingOfOneself its a tribute TO Lisa in her lyrics…don’t believe the hype,” she wrote.

Since the release last week, the song has been yanked from YouTube. Chilli and T-Boz are scheduled to perform at the Mixtape Festival at Hersheypark Stadium in Pennsylvania on July 27, where they’ll likely play the song. This will be their first show in the U.S. since 2009.

The TLC biopic, ‘Crazy, Sexy, Cool: The TLC Story,’ will debut on VH1 in November.
