Authorities say a 20-year-old Bronx resident, Juan Carlos, had been asked by the driver he'd hired to take the wheel. Investigators say 43-year-old Corey Robinson of Philadelphia wanted Carlos to drive while he took a nap.

According to state police, the 2016 Hyundai Sonata was traveling at 86 m.p.h. when it passed a trooper on Interstate 81 in the Town of Kirkwood.

The trooper tried to stop the car but it sped up and headed east on Route 17. The trooper lost sight of the vehicle after it left the highway at the North Road exit.

The car was found a short time later after it had crashed into a guide rail on Sanitaria Springs Road in the Town of Colesville.

Carlos and Robinson were taken into custody following a brief search. They were taken to Wilson Medical Center in Johnson City for treatment of minor injuries.

Police say Robinson told troopers he woke up from his nap and asked Carlos why he was driving so fast. He said Carlos said it was because police were chasing the car.

Robinson said he told Carlos to pull over but he refused to do so.

Carlos was charged with unlawfully fleeing a police officer in a motor vehicle and driving without a license. He also was cited for several other traffic violation.
