My boyfriend and I have been dating for almost two and a half years, and living together for over a year now. While we're not engaged, we have had those kinds of conversations, and I know that we will be engaged sooner rather than later. Wedding Wire made a list of things that almost engaged couples hate to hear, and I can relate to a few of them!

  • "You're not getting any younger!" is a tried and true statement for people who are not married or have yet to settle down with anyone. While this might be true, there is no definite age that anyone has to be married by. You might not get married until you're in the nursing home, and that's okay!
  • "What are you waiting for?!" Great question! And it's probably none of your business. It could be a financial issue (engagement rings are not cheap!) or a timing issue because one or both of you are still in school or not quite in your careers yet. It doesn't matter what the issue is though, the person asking you this question doesn't need to know.
  • "I had a dream that you two got engaged!" That's great, but unless the couple you're talking to actually did get engaged, then you don't need to mention this to them. No one likes awkward pressure being placed on them.

You always want the best for the people in your life that you love, but adding pressure or making things awkward by asking them questions about their timeline and plans for the future can only make things worse for the evening that you're spending with them. Everything will happen when it is meant to happen!
