I seriously thought I’d heard it all when it came to unconventional ways to determine pregnancy, but I was wrong. There’s absolutely no proof whatsoever that this works, but an overwhelming number of women are ditching store-bought pregnancy tests to determine if they’re pregnant and are turning to toothpaste.

That's right- toothpaste. Women have taken to mixing their urine with toothpaste to determine whether or not they’re pregnant.

According to Google Trends, the search for 'toothpaste pregnancy test' has grown substantially over the last 13 years as more women than ever before are interested in using this method.

According to Negative Pregnancy Test, the experiment works like this,

The toothpaste pregnancy test involves placing a moderate amount of toothpaste on a plate or in a cup and then adding a few drops of the woman's urine to it. If the woman is pregnant, the paste should change colors and even froth. If she is not pregnant, the toothpaste's appearance will not change at all. The chemical makeup of the paste interacts with a pregnant woman's urine to cause this noted change. Women have been using this homemade option for years now with relatively favorable results."

I can understand thinking you might be pregnant and wanting to know right away because I’ve been there, but it makes me sad how many women are trying the toothpaste message and getting wrong results and then are crushed when they find out they're not pregnant. Trust me, I know that there are very few things in life worse than wanting a baby, thinking you’re pregnant and then finding out that you’re not.

There’s a Q&A website called Quora where you can ask anything that you want and one woman asked 'How can I make a home pregnancy test with toothpaste?' Janet Caruana has a degree in Clinical Laboratory Science and Biology, replied: "No. A home pregnancy test has reagents in it that react with human chorionic gonadotropin. Instead of toothpaste, buy a home pregnancy test."

Will mixing your urine with toothpaste hurt anything? Not at all. But, if you suspect that you might be pregnant, please make sure that you reach out to a medical professional. We don't want anything to happen to you or your little one.
