I imagine that getting married is probably one of the biggest decisions that you will make in your life. When, where, to whom, all matter when it comes to marriage. Once you find the "to whom" though, there is a lot more still to be discussed. Here are some topics to talk about with your partner before you decide to walk down the aisle.

  • Children and whether you want them or not could be a deal breaker for a marriage. If one of you wants six children, and the other one of you doesn't want children at all, that is something that you need to talk about before you agree to get married.
  • Money, which I know can be a hard topic to talk about, but it is an important thing that needs a serious discussion. Whether you want to merge all of your bank accounts or open a separate one that you two can share as well as keep your separate accounts or anything in between is something that you need to talk about and agree upon.
  • Where to live because you may want to move back to your hometown to buy a house while your partner may want to move closer to his work in the city. This could be a deal breaker, so discuss this at length before you take the plunge.
  • Belief in a higher power if you haven't touched this topic yet in your relationship, do it! If one of you is an Orthodox Jew and the other is a Roman Catholic, or some other religions, this may become an issue if you want to have children and want to raise those children with a specific religion. Discuss, discuss, discuss!
  • Political leanings if this recent political election nearly broke you two up, this is something that needs to be talked about at length before you two get married. Will this be an issue again? That's something that you need to know.
  • Any skeletons in the closet that you have been putting off telling your partner about. Now is as good a time as ever to talk to your soon-to-be spouse about.

Compromises can be made with some of these topics, and all relationships are different. Whether these discussions bring you closer or not, hopefully you two will make it through and understand each other more.
