Being long distance is something that a lot of couples have to deal with, at least for part of their time together. Bustle says that there are some things about long distance relationships that many people don't realize.

  • They are more common than we might know whether that was back in college when your friend tried to make it work with their high school sweetheart, or your co-worker now who's partner works down in Florida or out in Colorado. So many people are trying to make long distance work, so if you're in one of those relationships, you're certainly not alone.
  • Misunderstandings can be easy because so much of your communication is electronic and not face-to-face which means that a lot can be misinterpreted. Talking about any concerns that arise is important to avoid further misunderstandings with your partner.
  • You need a system to keep in touch which could mean that your partner calls you every evening as they drive home from work, or you always share what you two ate that day so it feels like you had lunch together. Whatever the system might be, having something in place that makes the distance easier on both of you is key to your relationship's success.

Just like any relationship, it is important to keep the lines of communication open and honest. It might be hard not to see your partner every day, but with a little extra effort, you both can make the long distance work.
