Congressional Republicans from New York are pressuring Governor Andrew Cuomo to bow to federal demands that highway signs promoting state attractions be removed.

The letter signed by Thomas Reed and Claudia Tenney, representing the Southern Tier, and John Faso of Kinderhook, along with three others, urges the governor to direct the Department of Transportation and Thruway Authority to remove the signs to avoid forfeiting $14 million in federal funds.

The delegation says New York State was told two years ago that I Love NY signs on Empire State highways are a distraction and pose a “significant safety risk to motorists.”

If the signs are not removed by September 30, the state could lose the Federal Highway Administration funding that was withheld earlier this year.

In addition to permanently losing the funding, New York could face further penalties for not removing the Taste NY and tourism signs.
