Believe it or not, Binghamton has a lot of history. A lot of pop culture history, that is.

For example, American screenwriter Rodman Edward “Rod” Serling, the creator of The Twilight Zone, spent most of his childhood growing up right here in Binghamton. Serling paid tribute to his roots of Binghamton in a few of his episodes of The Twilight Zone, including his home address and the carousels.

Binghamton also had some brief mentions in various television shows, including the X-Files, Family Guy, The Office, Law & Order, The King of Queens, 7th Heaven, and The Sopranos.

The latest way that Binghamton is being recognized is in the upcoming film “The Rewrite,” starring Hugh Grant. The film is a romantic comedy revolving around Hugh Grant, “a washed-up screenwriter who begins teaching at a state university.” That state university is Binghamton University. The director of the film is also a Binghamton University graduate, Marc Lawrence ’81. Lawrence told Binghamton University Magazine that he has “nothing but love and affection for Binghamton.”

Some of the film was actually shot locally, including scenes from the Greater Binghamton Airport and at Binghamton University. Grant was seen dining at some local favorites as well while filming on location.

The film was released in October in the UK, but there is still a pending date of when this film will be released in the United States.
