When you think of crime in New York State, probably New York City seems the place with the worst crime rate. Well, you would be wrong. The answer to the area with the worst crime rate might be in our own backyard.

The facts are in and according to FBI crime data,  we have the most dangerous cities with a population over 10,000 in New York. Surprisingly, New York City is not even in the top 10. But, not one but TWO cities in the Southern Tier have made the list in the top 10.

Binghamton came in at number 4 and Johnson City was number 7. Here are the top 10 most dangerous cities in New York:

  1. Niagara Falls
  2. Buffalo
  3. Rochester
  4. Binghamton
  5. Syracuse
  6. Schenectady
  7. Johnson City Village
  8. Newburgh
  9. Albany
  10. Troy

The list was calculated by using a few different factors and statistics.

While there are surveys and public polls on what cities in a state are the most dangerous, you don't want to rely on speculation and opinion. Instead, you need to look at the hard numbers from the FBI’s last three years of reporting. Specifically, the FBI’s Uniform Crime Report which summarizes the number of property crimes and violent crimes in each city per year.

Violent crimes are defined as rapes, murders, robberies and aggravated assaults.

I want to just add that this in no way reflected the different police departments throughout the state. It is strictly based on the crimes being committed.

What do you think of the area you live in or this list?
